Display issues in EI 6.0

Postby dorjee » 07 Jan 2010, 06:10

Hi,

Blog pages are displayed differently in Firefox 3.5.x and IE 6.0.

This is how it is displayed in Firefox 3.5.x (no issues):

This is how it is displayed in IE6.0 (issues are marked red):
Image

Issue 1 - no round in tabs.
Issue 2 - no transparent background in the search icon
Issue 3 - Date and post title problem (new line)

Issue 1 and 2 present in both 3.1.0 and 3.1.5
Issue 3 is new for 3.1.5.

Regarding your points:
Issue 1 - no round in tabs.

This is not a bug and it is by design. It is very well documented on the official site: http://www.aquoid.com/news/themes/suffusion/ :
Internet Explorer:
* 6.0, 7.0, 8.0 – Works fine, but doesn’t show rounded borders or shadows (CSS3 features).
* 5.5 – Doesn’t show rounded borders or shadows (CSS3 features) and shows extra space below the navigation bar. I haven’t had much time to debug for a fossilized browser.

I have no intention of "fixing" this - it is too much of a hassle.
Issue 2 - no transparent background in the search icon

This is something I have not been able to fix. For some reason the PNG transparency fixes that I use fail to apply to this element. My only option here is to use a gif for IE6 and PNG for others, but it will mean converting all search icons to new gifs and that will take time.
Issue 3 - Date and post title problem (new line)

Will fix this one

Thanks for so fast reply!

Is it possible for you to share the solution for issue 3 here? So that I could apply it myself not waiting for the next revision of the theme?

One more issue 4 in EI6.0.
If a home link is displayed in the navigation bar as the icon, the bottom alignment is not correct (check the line at the bottom of the navigation bar):

By the way, issue 1 is also applicable for the latest Opera 10.10 (no round corners). Is it also expected?

I think there is no real sense for "correcting" a modern template for this old fuzzled browser

it is known since round about 8 years that IE 6 is a mess and doesn't support standards PLUS it is absolutely vulnerable and insecure, an open gate for all kind of spam virus trojans...

so it is better to update the browser than to demand to change the theme, in my opinion

the more users will notice that THEIR browser does not support standards, the more they maybe will update

even IE 8 is better than IE 6 ;)

Connie,
While I agree wholeheartedly with the statement that IE6 sucks, the fact is Suffusion is one of the only themes that behaves very well with it. It is not at 100%, but at least 95% of the things work as expected and I have put in a lot of effort to keep it that way. I could have, for example, said I will not support it at all, but that is not an option.

Even today IE6 has around 15% of the browser market. A lot of companies haven't moved to IE7 or IE8, owing to the fact that they did not move to Vista. As a result their employees (potential visitors of your blog) are stuck with a bad browser. All of this makes it fairly likely that your site's readers are likely to be using IE6 either due to ignorance, or because they have no option. So it is always a good option to support IE6 (not IE5.5 - that is a true dinosaur).

In fact when you look for any theme / template, you should ALWAYS look for cross-browser compatibility, because it never matters what browser you use, but what matters is what your visitors use.

Dorjee,
By the way, issue 1 is also applicable for the latest Opera 10.10 (no round corners). Is it also expected?

Again, from the official theme site:
Opera:
* 8+ – Works as designed, except for rounded borders and shadows

So obviously this is expected. However my understanding from the official Opera site is that the pre-alpha release for 10.5 has support for the CSS3 tags, so if you are adventurous you can try that.

Overall the behavior of Internet Explorers is quite slow (for what reason ever). Please feel free to visit http://www.doerflis.de/blog.

Thank you very much and
have a great time,

Uwe.

IE8 is rendering fine. Try switching off the compatibility mode. I will look into the IE7 issue.
