how add a category to the sidebar

Postby charlietech » 11 May 2012, 15:16

Ok I know how to add a widget to a sidebar but my problem is,I cant find a widget that let me display the categories the way I want to. All i want is to be able to have a it set up like this:

category title
__________________________
sub category
sub category

Simple right? yea but I cant find one.

Im in the fitness world so i want users to be able to look for body parts, fitness level and equipment with a breeze, any suggestions? As you can see,Im not that smart when it comes to this so i need something simple for me to use.

Thanks

I don't use the plugin because I don't need it... But, like any other plugin+widget need to be some settings at Dashboard -> Settings and also, directly when you add the widget at Appearance -> Widgets... Most probably your categories/subcategories are included by default.

I really don't understand your question... Maybe is too late (is 3:30 in the morning here), maybe I am the one who need some brain training... So... if you go at Appearance -> Widget and drag the Collapsing Categories widget in the sidebar where you need it, you will have the categories in that sidebar... What other link you need? If you can't go to the categories pages... maybe is needed to have some posts in those categories... Write a test post and assign it to one of those categories and see what happen.

Ok, now I understand... Forget about Collapsing Categories...

You can make separated Custom Menus at Appearance -> Menu. Make a menu named, let's say "Bodypart". Add "bodypart" category to it, but say as Navigation Label "All"... Now add the subcategories. By drag and drop you can arrange the order. Save the menu but don't assign it to any navigation bar. Don forget to save, the menu isn't created without save.
Now go to Appearance -> Widget and drag the Custom Menu widget in sidebar. In the widget box, set the name of menu to "bodypart". Do the same steps with all categories... In that way you will have categories organised like on "exercises" site, except only that yours will be in one column, not in two.

For an advanced search, with filtering by more fields, you can use: http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/wp- ... ds-search/
