Few Questinons for Someone New to Theme

Postby kix345 » 14 Jun 2012, 13:04

First let me start by saying I am new to managing a theme in WordPress so bear with me. The few questions I have are:

1. I have my recent posts appearing as status' however, Each one is bullets. Is it possible to get rid of those.
2. Within a particular post is it possible to get rid of the comments menu at the bottom. I do not want individuals to be able to comment on my site.
3. I want to add a categories area without adding a sidebar. I also want it to be able to filter my posts based on the category I select. Is this possible?

Thanks!

Yes all is possible.

Give us a url to your site.

Comments are turned off for individual posts in the option below the post editing window if you can't see it click screen options top right of edit window and turn them on. You can also disable posts in the theme as well in Suffusion Options > Back End > Comment settings BUT you also need to do it on the individual post as well.

Look at Suffusion Options > Other Graphical Elements > Page and Post bylines for various options that may help with your comments.

It looks like I have all the comments hidden based off Suffusion Options in WordPress but I am still seeing the comments pop up under an individual post.

Your page don't exist.

For disabling comments:
1. Dashboard -> Settings -> Discussion, untick Allow people to post comments on new articles. You can notice the paranthesis from that option (These settings may be overridden for individual articles.)
2. Disable comments for each old posts and pages because, as said the parenthesis, the comments is still allowed for those. The easy way, in the list of posts (or pages) choose the little "Quick Edit" link which appear on hover over each post from list. You will see the option to disable comments for that individual post.
3. At Suffusion Options -> Other Graphical Elements -> Post and Page Bylines choose to hide Comments Link for posts and pages.
4. If you use another posts formats than default (like 'Gallery', 'Status', and so on) at Suffusion Options -> Other Graphical Elements -> Post Formats, for each format you use you can also "Hide the comments link", like for bylines.
5. Finally, at Suffusion Options -> Backend -> Comments Settings you can Hide "Comment form closed" on desired pages or posts.

This is great! Thank you both for the advice. Do either of you have any answer to my two other questions?

For 1. I already answer - "Your page don't exist". Without acces to your site I can't use Inspect Element to see what you need for hiding bullets...
For 3.... I really don't understand your question... maybe a mockup where you can indicate what you wish will help.

My page doesn't exist because the WordPress dashboard was set up as a staging site by someone besides myself. My main responsibility is to populate / design the layout of the site.

As far as Categories are concerned. After thinking about it I'd like to add categories to my main navigation bar. I'd like it to be a drop down listing the categories (lighting, audio, video). The other things on my navigation are links and those are set fine but is it possible to add it to my main menu keeping with the drop down menu?

You can add your categories, as you wish, in menu, at Suffusion Options -> Other Graphical Elements -> Navigation Bar Below (or Above) Header... just scroll down on the options page until you see the options for categories.

Also, you can make a Custom Menu at Appearance -> Menus, where you can select pages/categories/links and arrange them by drag-and-drop in any order you wish. Asign this menu to Navigation Bar Below (or Above) Header in the little panel from top left of the Menus panel and you will have on the site this new menu.
