I'm working on a local newspaper site and cannot see where or how to style subheads in excerpts so that they are styled differently from the main body of the article that is excerpted. Right now, it looks silly - the subhead just runs right into the first sentence. I'd like to at least make the subhead bold if possible...Either that or I'm going to have to eliminate the subheads.

Use a manual excerpt - that will preserve your HTML markup.
