Category Icons and Suffusion

I am having a world of trouble getting my category icons (I have the plugin "Category Icons") to appear where I expect and in the correct size.

Can someone point me to a reference or just explain where I should be seeing the large icons, where I should be seeing the small icon, and where I should be seeing no icons at all.

I am using Category Icons v 2.2.1 and Suffusion v4.2.8. I am working mainly with the Magazine template.

Hi Geoff,

I don't know about the Magazine template, and I only used one size of icons, not large/small, but here's how I got going with Category Icons and Suffusion. Actually, I had to switch to Category Icons Lite, but I am very pleased with it, because it was much easier to implement -- I struggled for days with Category Icons itself.

Anyway, one icon -- maybe the small one? -- appears in front of the category name in the category list -- for me, it's in the sidebar. (I also modified the CSS for that unordered list, to get rid of the bullets.) The other icon -- the large icon, I imagine -- appears in front of the post title. I was expecting it to be under the title, where the category itself is listed, but that's not what happened. Note that you have to make some modifications to a couple of files to get the icons to appear with the title -- see the above link for info.

I'm still trying to get the larger icons to show on the category page and the smaller ones to appear on individual posts and in excerpt views. Instead I am getting the smaller ones on the category page and none at all on posts and excerpts.

I do get the smaller ones on the Category Icon List widget in my sidebar, and in my RSS feed, both of which are exactly what I want.

Now if only I could figure out the rest

I was not able to get any icons on individual posts until I did those edits to the theme files (using a child theme).

I am backing out of all of this. Maybe I can add the category icons to the individual posts later.

I got it to work, sort of, following the above instructions, except the number "1" kept appearing too. Also posts would not show multiple categories, only one, until viewed in Single Post mode. And not always then.

The inconsistent appearance plus the (not very helpful) support available in the wordpress category icons support thread has convinced me to just leave things as they are for now (at least my RSS feed looks good ) and maybe take another run at this in a couple weeks.

Unless I can find a more intuitive plugin that does the same thing.

Hi,

I'm the author of category icons. You should try with the last version. It should work. The 1 displayed is because you do an echo get_cat_icon() without the echo=false parameter.
