how to change the order of the widgets in the sidebars

Postby marcnyc » 30 Apr 2010, 07:35

I thought that I could re-order the widgets in my sidebars by just dragging and dropping them in the positions I want them but it doesn't seem to work for all widgets... some just have a life of their own and end up always at the top or the bottom... do I need a plugin to order the widgets or am I missing something?
I know Suffusion has the floating boxes and I was wondering if that has anything to do with this. I know the widgets can be moved around in the sidebar by the users but I want to be able to set the order of what the user sees the first time s/he visits.
thanks

I am sure you know the rules inbetween ;=) URL please!

1) deactivate the option for the users that they can move the widgets around

2) you can always define the order of the widgets in the bar. It just needs some drag-and-drop-gymnastics. Sometimes it is not possible to place a widget as the lowest one, but in that case you can move the lowest one in the next step..

3) you do not need a special plugin, just some patience and maybe different browsers ;=)

4) It is not easy for us to imagine which plugins could be affect by your suspicion, you should name them. You know precise questions get precise answers ;)

well, to summarize: it is general property of the dashboard / design / Widgets to drag and drop widgets. It is not a property of a widget not to support drag and drop in the widgets area

If you think that a special widget is behaving like you tell us, you should go to that plugin page and ask there.

Please, accept that I am joking a little bit, don't mind, but I am a bit sarcastic, I had no coffee until now :(

Suffusion uses "docking boxes" for its widgets. This lets you drag and drop widgets on your blog and it stores your widget positions in a cookie. Two things you must know about docking boxes:
1. Your widgets need to have titles to be a part of the docking box groups.
2. Once you load your page the cookie is created - after that regardless of how many widgets you add in your admin area, the order of widgets on your front-end will change only if you either explicitly change them on the front-end or if you refresh your cache.
