customizing a page

Good day everyone. I really love this theme because of ease of use and flexibility.

I'm using suffusion to create this site, http://rebasics.com.au/

The top box with yellow background is the featured content area and it is only shown on the main page.

My problem is that I want to make it wider - around 940px ( my custom width is 960px) without overlapping the sidebar. The sidebar automatically moves down when I increase the width of the main column. Is there a way also wherein the sidebar will automatically move down when I increase the width of the featured content? Because when I tried to make it wider, it will just overlap the sidebar.

The layout I'm aiming for the main page is somewhat like this http://iplotz.com/app/preview/37704/37704_8.html and the other pages will normally like this http://rebasics.com.au/property-buyers/

I hope you can help me guys. Thank you.
