Please help me hide? fold? comment form

Postby owattara » 26 Jan 2011, 05:45

Hi. I am a new Suffusion user, trying to set up a blog using 3.7.3.

Can please anyone help me with hiding the comment form?
I've searched the forum but could not find a solution :(

By hiding, I don't mean disabling it and getting rid of it altogether - I DO want a comment function available to visitors. It's just that I want to keep the blog looking simple and plain, and this big blank form gaping at all the visitors isn't helping.
What I'm wanting is a subtle text link (like "leave a comment") which, by clicking, will OPEN UP a comment form where it should be...

Hope that makes sense to you, and hope someone knows how to set it up that way.

I don't think that you can do that in Suffusion.

I think your best bet would be to look for a plugin on the Wordpress site.

Thanks for your reply, Colin.

Cos I see this folded-up-"leave a comment" style blog around and cos Suffusion offers such flexible design options, I just assumed there was a way to achieve this.

Following your advise, I searched WP plugins with no luck.
Guess I'll have to keep looking...

What about the wp-comment-master plugin. I haven't used it but I think it is pretty close to what you want.

Nope. Just checked out wp comment master. It's just an Ajax comment replacement that has some features for displaying comments across various pages.
But thanks for the tip!

<bump>

I REALLY would like to know how to do this too. And I know that it's possible, because in my brand new 4.1.5 version of Suffusion I have tasteful "No responses" link on my posts (which do not show the comment entry by default), but I have pages with a similar "Add comments" link that do display the empty comment entry form by default.

It really spoils the look. Can someone point me at a solution? TIA

Hi,

I had the same problem in wanting to hide the comments form on my sites and will 48 replied with the post below and it worked. Try it and see if this works for you.

Hi,
Don't know if you have figured out a solution yet but the following has just worked for me:
1. Click on the page you need to change.
2. Click Edit, in the top right-hand corner click on the screen options button and then tick the discussion box from the drop-down box.
3. Then scroll down to the bottom of the page and you'll see the heading Discusson. Then untick the box that says allow comments.
5. Finally update the page to save changes and your are done.
6. ENJOY.

Thanks destritt, but the situation here is a little different.

We don't want to disable the comments functionality, we just want the form to "hide" until a visitor actually wants to use it.

For instance, in my posts right now there is a link to add responses that causes the form to appear. That't perfect! But for my pages, there is a link to add comments, and the comment entry form is visible all the time. Yuck.

I've not yet been able to find a difference between the configuration of the pages and the posts, but there's got to be something in there someplace.

I'd appreciate any help. A lot!

You are actually wrong. A comment form is always visible on your posts as well, provided you are seeing a single post. There is absolutely no provision to click on "a link to add responses that causes the form to appear". The only place where you don't see the comment form for posts is on archive views like your front page or category views, where you see more than one post. The reason you don't see the comment form on views with multiple posts is because there are technical issues with WP doing it.

The only way to hide a comment form is to disable comments. Or pick a theme that lets you do Ajax comments (Suffusion doesn't, and I am not aware of themes that do).
