Thanks for this. I've been looking for a solution too. This seems like it should work, but I'm still having problems.

Btw, with the free version of WPTouch, you can set the home page for mobile devices too, so I don't think you need Pro to do what you're saying. I don't have Pro.

One problem I'm having, and maybe I should list this in a separate thread, is I can't get the Page of Posts, or the All Categories (which I'm trying for the mobile home page too) templates to format the way I want.

In Suffusion Options, Templates, I have Page of Posts set to do excerpts only, with 0 set for full story. And elsewhere, I have the featured posts slider set to only show on the front page. And yet, when I go to the page I have set up as a Page of Posts, it shows the slider and full posts, not excerpts.

Similarly, if I try the All Categories template for the page, it's not showing the way I have that template set up, which is, once again, excerpts only, and to show only the top categories. Instead, it's showing the exact same thing as the Page of Posts.

I have cleared caches, and no change. Very strange.

Plugins for mobile devices

Postby Shapeshifter 3 » 30 Jan 2012, 16:11

If you get a chance, read my new post dated January 30, 2011. I've been after the same issues and I list 6 WordPress plugins that you can try. As of right now, I don't care for WPtouch since it alters the way that your website looks. I've posted on WordPress.org's forum in two places. The first one was the "Requests" area, and I was told that this is NOT a core issue, but a FRAMEWORK and/or THEME solution. So I'm here hoping hoping that Theme Developers such as Sayontan would possibly resolve it with his future updates (maybe 4.0?).

Absolutely no chance of it before 4.0. Sorry.

To use the Magazine template, you have to set a Wordpress Page as the 'home page', then go to Settings/Reading and tell Wordpress to display that Page as the front page. There is also a selection right below that... Posts Page:

If you set Posts Page to the same Page as Front Page, you will have a frustrating time with mobile themes. You need to have a different Page set up as your Posts page than your Front page.

I use WP Touch and when mobile users go to my site, they see a simple list of the most recent stories. Nice and simple, but it works.

Personally, WP Mobile Detector worked a lot better for me than WP Touch. I tried setting up a special page for WP Touch, but it just didn't work well. WP Mobile Detector gave me a better score on a site that tests for mobile compatibility. I'm still in the dark ages, mobile phone-wise, and don't have a smart phone, so I really on testing sites.

Unfortunately, all the great custom stuff we like about Suffusion apparently makes it harder to render for mobile phones. As Sayontan said, it really needs a "responsive" feature to it. Hopefully he'll get around to that someday soon.

Meanwhile, the only true way to make it look great on mobile phones is to have a separate "mobile.myawesomeblog.com" setup that you can redirect to. Here's a good, if old, article on the subject: http://www.mikeindustries.com/blog/arch ... e-friendly

Really? Because I took a look at http://aquoid.com/news/themes/suffusion on my BlackBerry Torch and my wife's iPhone and it seemed to render just fine and dandy. And in fact in terms of layout that page is about as custom as Suffusion gets (I don't use a mobile plugin).

I did write about responsive design on the theme blog and that resulted in a bit of discussion as well (http://aquoid.com/news/2012/03/suffusio ... /#comments). The crux of my argument is this: the mobile browser makers are more eager to provide a full experience to users than have developers deliver responsive designs. As far as layouts are concerned I believe a developer's (and a site owner's) responsibility ends with checking that the layout doesn't look ghastly on mobile devices. Beyond that the responsibility is with the device makers. Think about it: before the advent of the iPhone, the major full-featured browser for the mobile was Opera, and its market share was really low compared to the mobile version of IE or the BlackBerry browser. But once the iPhone got traction, Android followed suite and very soon the market had nice, capable browsers in the majority.

Responsive design is on the cards, but I honestly don't believe that responsive design is just about killing sidebars on smaller screens.

Hi,
Am I missing something with regards to Mobile plugins. I have tried several .... WPtouch, Mobile Press, Worpress Mobile Edition. I don't seem to have a problem installing & activating them, and I can change all the settings etc, however my site still displays as per normal on my iphone.

Is there a setting in suffusion which prevents a mobile version of the site ?

Sayontan is right, this page is awesome on my sgs2. Neverless, we should have the possibility to switch to a lighter theme, like wptouch
