Widget + Favicon Help

Postby SamSam » 30 Dec 2009, 07:16

Hi Sayontan,

Like most people here, I want to thank you immensely for your easy template! However, I am still a novice at this and I am still having some issues that I would greatly appreciate your help with!!

widgets -- I have the twitter widget that I already added but the text is not aligned with the bird - how can I fix that? (http://burrsandberries.com)

I also want to add a 'facebook page' widget with the facebook icon aligned to the left of it, and a 'subscribe' to RSS feed widget - I tried doing that in the 'widgets' sidebar-1 column under 'appearance' in the site editor. But the RSS box is giving me this message (RSS Error: The data could not be converted to UTF-8) when I try to put in the RSS feed URL (http://burrsandberries.com/?feed=rss2)

I'd like the three links to be organized like the ones on this site (http://www.twigandthistle.com/blog/) if you know what I mean? Just basically in a neat list.

Also, I have a favicon.ico file uploaded onto the media library on my blog - how could I make it an icon near the website address field??

Also, is there a way I could add a background image to the blog and tile it??

That's all I have for now. I really hope you can help! And sorry if any of the questions are silly, I tried the best I could and left asking you to the last resort!! Thanks!! :)

Favicon move it to the root directory and it will appear. (Where your index.php is)

The other questions will have to wait for someone more knowledgeable to answer.

You can create a "Text widget" with the links to the three things you want - Twitter, RSS and Facebook. It is quite simple. You only need to put this in the text widget:
Code: Select all
<a href="url-for-following-you-on-twitter><img src='url-for-twitter-icon' alt=''>Follow me on twitter</a><br/>
<a href="url-for-following-you-on-Facebook><img src='url-for-Facebook-icon' alt=''>Follow me on Facebook</a><br/>
<a href="url-for-feed><img src='url-for-RSS-icon' alt=''>Subscribe</a><br/>

Hi Sayontan, Thanks for the quick reply! I tried the code you sent me in a text widget but it messed up the sidebar layout and only the facebook one sort of worked. Could you maybe check it out? http://burrsandberries.com

You put the text I provided into the Custom Styles option - you should first delete that.
Second, you have not closed the quotation mark on the "a href" elements in your text widget, hence the messed up display..

Sorry I was trying something before and must have forgotten it there. I deleted the text from the custom styles section. And this is exactly what I have in the text box in the widgets.

<a href="http://twitter.com/burrsandberries"><img src="http://burrsandberries.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/twitter-icon1.jpg" alt='twitter-icon'>Follow me on twitter</a><br/>

<a href="http://www.facebook.com/pages/Burrs-Berries/224532359404"><img src="http://burrsandberries.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/facebook-icon.jpg" alt='facebook-icon'>Follow me on Facebook</a><br/>

<a href="http://burrsandberries.com/?feed=rss2"><img src="http://burrsandberries.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/feed-icon.jpg'' alt='rss-icon'>Subscribe to Burrs & Berries</a><br/>

The layout is still messed up, what am I doing wrong?

Please do a thorough check at your end before reporting something as an issue. Your "src" field in the "img" tag for the RSS feed is not closed by a double-quote, but instead it has two consecutive single quotes.
