Changes to Magazine template has no effect

Postby scottb » 30 Dec 2009, 11:51

I have tried changing many different settings in the magazine template but nothing at all changes on the displayed page.
I have enabled and disabled:
Enable Featured Posts on magazine template
Show main page content for the magazine template
Show headlines for the magazine template
Magazine Template - Main title alignment for headlines section
Magazine template - Select categories for headlines
Magazine template - Select categories for excerpts
Magazine template - Select category blocks to show

In various combinations; all to no avail; the page looks exactly the same. It is a very nice looking blog page that I have finally come up with, but I would love to try out a magazine look. Any suggestions.

You need to create a page that uses the Magazine template. You can do this from the "Edit Page" menu. You will see the list of templates to use for a page on the right side. Pick Magazine from there.

Really nice. Can I set this magazine page to display as home page?

Yes, you can. Once you have created a page with the magazine template, you can go to Settings -> Reading, then set "Front page displays" to "A static page (select below)" and pick the page you created.

Wow, thanks for your quick response Sayontan. Yes, that clarified everything. The templates are for use with pages... of course!

I had every possible option selected when I created the page, and, needless to say, it was quite full. I will have a great time playing with it.

And as resistanceisfruitful pointed out, it can then be made the homepage; which answered my next question... having categories set as my navigation, there was no actual Home link on the nav bar (of course you can click the title in the banner but...). So I assume if I set the nav bar to put one tab up for pages, and direct it to the magazine page it will then display as a Homepage link on the nave bar :)

Now my question is, if I title the magazine page "index" will it be picked up as the home page of the website url, or will the php main wordpress homepage override that?

Ahhh, so much to learn.

Your awesome Sayontan, I wish you the best of luck, and much success; and will kick something back to you if I ever start to make any money off this web stuff. You have made it a much easier experience.

And I echo what resistanceisfruitful said on the wordpress forum, it is hardly like me to lavish this much praise on anything.

Scottb,
There is a much easier solution to your question. Go to Navigation Bar Setup, then look at the options under 'Show "Home" page'. This will automatically hook up to the page you have set as your home.

Sayontan.
