Translation instructions need updating

It seems that due to WP changes, the way localisation files work has changed, which means that the translation instructions provided here need to be updated. I understand that the second part of the po and mo file names is dropped, so now if you want localisation files for, say, French, you should name them fr.mo and fr.po, instead of fr_FR.mo and fr_FR.po.

I downloaded a couple of localisation files (which were named according to the old convention) and I spent a few hours trying to find out what I was doing wrong, before understanding that all I needed to do was rename them. So I registered here in order to post this piece of information, I hope it will save a few people from going through the same trouble.

BTW, it's also a chance to point out that I'm enthusiastic about this theme It's probably the most customisable theme available, while its support and development circle is unparalleled; in addition, by taking advantage of html and css knowledge, one easily tweak Suffusion to whatever needed. So, many thanks for creating this theme

Thanks for the info. Do you have a source that I can look to for reference? I have checked two places and can't seem to locate the change.

Unfortunately no, finding out about it was mostly an educated guess. I'm using qTranslate to set up a bilingual site, and that's what it gave me a clue: its localisation files and all references omit the second part of the name. In addition, this post mentions something similar (unfortunately it doesn't provide a source).

I should also point out that I was trying to set up the Greek localisation files in particular. In your first link, some languages use only the first part of the name (Greek among them), and some both of them. It seems inconsistent, but it might be possible that some languages need only the first part of the name while others need both. As I haven't tested this, I can't be sure.

That's right. I have explained it here:

For example if you are creating a Hindi translation you will name your file hi_IN.po (hi = Hindi, IN = India). The language and the country are both important because of linguistic differences by region. As a result Portuguese for Portugal (pt_PT) is different from Portuguese for Brazil (pt_BR), and Norway as a country has two language variants, Bokmål (nb_NO) and Nynorsk (nn_NO).

Note the bit about Portuguese. The second part helps define the region, particularly when there are differences in the dialect. For Greek there is only one region, hence the region suffix is not needed, as is the case with Arabic or Finnish or Estonian.

If somebody can confirm for a fact that the second piece has to be dropped I will change the documentation. I have had some complaints from users about not getting the translations, but that might have something to do with them using a multi-lingual plugin (as is the case with you).

Your active theme is Suffusion, but when I try to access http://www.chihiromasui.com/wp-content/ ... tion/fr.po from your site I get a 404 error. The same happens with fr_FR.po. The only URL where I see the file is for the core suffusion.po file itself: http://www.chihiromasui.com/wp-content/ ... ffusion.po.

Are you sure you have the file? Where do you have it? Is it possible that you have it in a child theme but you haven't activated the child theme?

Since i didn't really understand where to put the fr_FR.PO files at the time, I sort of put them all over the place until it worked...fr.PO and fr.MO are in /www/wp-content/languages, and there is a lone fr.MO in /www/wp-includes/languages/.

Shoud I get rid of them?

In /www/wp-content/languages/, there are "continents-cities-fr.mo" and .po, "ms-fr.mo" and .po, which I have no idea what they are and how they arrived there! Perhaps I should put them all in /www/wp-content/themes/suffusion/translation/?

And a while ago, I did try to understand the child theme thing, but really couldn't figure out anything so gave up.

The file didn't exist when I checked last - now it does. Instead of this file put in fr_FR.po and the MO file as well (without the MO file translation will not happen). What does the wp-config.php file have - fr or fr_FR?

I don't know what they are. They might be from a plugin, because wp-content shouldn't have a languages folder.

Thank you, adding the MO file to www.chihiromasui.com/wp-content/themes/ ... ranslation did the trick, and now everything is in French EXCEPT for "continue reading" which seems to be a "more-link" issue rather than a translation issue.

Is there any way I can add this to the PO file?

I think before the upgrade, I just changed the English to French manually, but I can't remember exactly how or even whether I did it.

Could you please help me ? I am at a loss what to do.

finally figured out how to change the "continue reading" tag, which is the only thing that won't get translated. I had to change it directly in actions.php. Which means it will change back to "continue reading" at the next update...

Anyway, thanks for your help, everyone.
