html not taking

Postby Misty » 01 Feb 2012, 11:14

Hello again.
I am trying to format a post and even though it shows up write on the post write page, it will not show up that way on the site (or even show the code on the source code page).

http://www.thecuriousskeptic.com/podcast/

I also uploaded an attachment of a screenshot of the post write page to show the formatting that is not taking. ..... just realized it won't upload a docx attachment -
Here is the code from the html tab on the post write screen:

Coming 2/5/12

<em><strong>He's Got the Look</strong></em>:
An attempt to find an explanation behind the effect of <a href="http://www.braco.net">Braco the Gazer</a>. For this podcast I am joined by my friend and fellow skeptic Brian Heinser of the <a href="http://amateurskeptics.com/">Amateur Skeptics </a>podcast.

So what did I break? :)

You are displaying excerpts. Excerpts generated automatically by WP have all their HTML stripped out. If you want to display an excerpt AND show HTML, you have to craft a manual excerpt for each such post. Otherwise you should display full posts.

Thanks! That's kind of silly of Wordpress to do.

Not really. Let's say you have your content this way:
I am a pretty awesome guy. Check out <a href='...'>my personal blog</a>.

Now, suppose your excerpts are set to be 10 words long. If you start counting words, would you count the "a", the "href" and the url in your anchor tag? Suppose you do, then you will build invalid markup. Suppose you don't count those, then your 10th word would end at "personal". Again, you would have an open "<a>", without a closing tag. That is why it makes sense to strip out any HTML markup and just count the words for automatic excerpts.
