Custom Layout for Static Page

Postby pmeggitt » 06 May 2012, 19:54

A bit new to WP. I have a static page where I don't want any sidebars. For the page I choose the custom layout template and under the additional options set layout to be 0 (no sidebars). When I view the page only the headers show, not the page content. If I change the number of sidebars they show up but still no page content. I was hoping to find a page content widget but as far as I can tell there isn't one. What I want to do seems rather elementary - display a static page with no sidebars. What am I doing wrong?

For Custom Layout is stated that you won't see the page content, only what you add in widget areas will be displayed. If you want to show the content too, you can try the magazine template for your page. At Suffusion Options -> Templates -> Magazine, can set to show the main content for the page that use this template.

It doesn't really feel right to use the magazine template to display a static page without sidebars. There are a bunch of options for the magazine template that don't apply to a static page. Can a widget be added for page content? What is the downside of using the "No sidebars (deprecated)" template for now?

You can use your widgets in an ad-hoc widget area on your static page. In that way will be showed the content of page and the widget too.

Isn't any downside for "No Sidebars" - is deprecated for the Page Attributes panel (on the right) because is added at Additional Options for Suffusion (below the edit area).

I'm not quite sure I understand. I want to use the custom layout template on a static page that has content. You said that a custom template would not display the page content but only widget content. What I am wondering is whether there is a widget that will display the content of a static page. I did try the deprecated "No Sidebars" template which seems to work so I am good for now. On the other hand, the custom layout template does seem to be much more flexible so I would be happy to figure out how to get that to work.

This is an example of the custom layout template: http://aquoid.com/news/themes/suffusion/. As you can see, it shows only widget areas. You can apply the "No Sidebars" layout to it (from the Additional Options for Suffusion -> Layouts section). If you don't need the flexibility of the custom layout template, you could simply create a new page and assign to it the 0 sidebars layout. On that page you can use what Suffusion offers as "Ad Hoc widget areas". That will let you add widgets to a page.

I wonder if this was so simple!

I was using the plugin Page Links To, some time back, but although its purpose had gone it was still sitting there active and I decided it was time to get rid of it.

The front static page was set to the Page named Dummy which used Page Links to, to redirect to Home.

I deactivated and then later deleted after this didn't work the Page Links To plugin. and set static to home. But it is displaying blank content, the header, footer and sidebar all display as they should just blank main content area. This does'nt matter if I use the domain name only as the URL or domain name/home.

If I unset the static page or set it elsewhere, home is reachable and displays as it should. The content are all in widgets on a Custom Layout Template. If I set the static page against a different page the same problem occurs for any page using Custom Layout, Default Templates seem to show OK.

So the problem seems to be the combination of Custom Layout and Static Page and as I said all pages are perfectly functional if not set to Static Front page.

Any pointers on how to fix this please!

Thanks guys.

Ok I have seen there is a conflict with Display Widgets after disabling all plugins and reactivating one by one. I am unsure how to proceed short of dumping it however any thoughts, suggestions would be most welcome!

Ditch Display Widgets and just search for an alternative plug-in would be my advice.

I think that's what I will have to do - however for the moment its a quicker option for me to simply put Page Links to Back in place (which was redirecting the Static Home Page, hence the blank effect never seen, and when ditching that this issue came to light) its simply a time thing but irritating none the less.

Thanks guys!
