"Do not link to this page" option

Postby dhkendall » 08 May 2012, 21:25

To start with, my URL (for the time being, until I finish making it later this year, when it moves to its permanent URL) is http://www.nationalanthems.info/wordpress/

So far, I have two pages set with the "Do not link to this page" option in the menu bar above, the one labelled "A" (the dropdown for all the pages beginning with "A"), and the one labelled "Afghanistan" (the parent for all the other Afghanistan pages). "A" behaves as the button says it should, only "#" comes up in the navigation bar because it's not meant to be a selectable page. However, the parent "Afghanistan" page, also not meant to be selected (exactly the same as "A") shows the permalink name I gave it in my browser's navigation bar instead of "#", and while I created a (blank) page for that one, I get a 404 error when I click on it, even if I select "view" from the "edit page section of the admin area.

So, why isn't "Afghanistan" behaving like "A"? (The only thing I can think of is that Afghanistan is a child of A, but that doesn't seem like a logical reason.)

I seem to have fixed it for now by just messing with the Permalink (figuring, since it's not meant to be clickable, I don't have to worry what the permalink says, right? I think maybe the fact that the permalink was just "af/" might have been what caused the problem (though "A"'s permalink is "a/" and works fine ... )

So, it seems to work now, and if anyone else has this problem in the future and is looking at this forum for advice, I hope you come across this post. And, since you're posting from the future, maybe say if we finally got flying cars or not, us here in 2012 are still waiting!

How come you're not dealing with this through the WP custom menu system, and in the menu system, if you want a menu option to not do anything you just link to # ?

Because I'm not that well versed in Wordpress, don't really know how to make a custom menu with Wordpress - was please to see the process set up well with Suffusion, so used it.

Just a note, since future me had this problem again, and in case someone else does as well, leave the permalink field blank. That seems to be what works.

And as long as future me is leaving messages for past me, bet on San Francisco to win the 2012 World Series. You'll thank me later.

Still waiting for flying cars in 2013, though.
