Suffusion 4.2.0 Widgets Misbehaving

Postby theTokyoBlonde » 07 May 2012, 23:41

Hi Sayontan,

Just upgraded to 4.2.0 and mostly everything has gone well I've come across a couple of issues and would be great to have your input!

My site is http://www.thetokyoblonde.net (despite our site name, we're a family-firendly kinda site :))

On the main page I'm using tiles and used a custom style for each style (gradient/shadow). It has two columns but the first column lacks the effect whereas the second column is fine, it appears as it should do. When I load the page the first column momentarily loads correctly but then appears without my custom style. This is on Safari and Chrome.

Another issue is the header widget area. The header area (which has a 728x90 ad in a widget) was flush with the navigation bar below the header. Now there's a slight gap between the widget area and the nav bar. (Safari and Chrome)

Last issue is Firefox. Most of the widgets in the sidebar and header and the widgets below the bottom nav bar aren't appearing, however the tile post gradient effect seems to be fine.

I've tried fixing things but not getting much headway. Biggest issue is the Firefox one an I thought it might be the cache but I can't see a cache directory in my wp-content directory.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Just to follow up, but from the looks of it, it seems like the widgets missing in Firefox are the text widgets, except for one which seems to working. I'm unable to test the issues in Internet Explorer, so I tried an online emulator and IE 8 exhibits the same widget issue.

The widget area below the bottom nav bar is a plugin called 'NRelate'.

hope this helps.

Cheers.

I'm on a roll with the posts!

Just thought of something about the widget area below the header. It's the NRelate plugin I mentioned earlier. I also use it in posts for related content and just checked and it's not showing either in Firefox. It's fine in Safari and Chrome.

I could re-index Nrelate but I'll leave it just now so folks can look at the site as it is and maybe it's another issue.

Cheers.

*Update:

Fixed the header widget height issue by defining a height value of 90px in a custom CSS.

Noticed another issue in Firefox. My embedded videos won't play, either.

I'd be grateful if anyone could take a look at the site in Firefox and another browser, such as Chrome or Safari and if they can see the issues.

Just to sum up. Firefox seems to have my header widgets and widgets in the sidebar a bit messed up, some won't display and the one with the recent posts shows far more than what it's set to. Also, the widgets below the bottom nav bar aren't showing nor are the ones after posts.

Many thanks!

I'm beginning to think this might not be an issue with 4.2 because I have another site (on a different host, domain, etc.) and it's on 4.0.7 and it's having the same issue in Firefox.

It's a site I don't use much now, but took a look at it and same problem with widgets in the header, sidebar, videos not playing. On this other site I can mess around with it, so I'll start pulling things apart and see if I can spot the issue.

Cheers.

*Update:

On my other site I mentioned just above. I disabled then removed all plugins, custom styles, and reset Suffusion. Same issue with widgets and videos. Everything fine in Chrome and Safari, so I'm guessing it's some kinda Firefox issue since Webkit browsers seem fine.

hope this helps!

Actually I didn't see much of a difference between FF and Chrome. Mind you, I have ads disabled on FF, so I don't see the actual ad. Would it be possible for you to post screenshots of the differences that you see? Since I am not familiar with your site maybe I am missing the differences.

Ugh, I can't believe I missed this, but the problem was Firefox had Javascript disabled. Enabled it and it's back to normal. I had no idea Firefox had it disabled, or perhaps I did it at some point in the past but glad it's back to normal and the storm is once again calm :)

It seems that any widget, or plugin that uses Javascript won't display when javascript is disabled.

Thank you for your time and enjoy the day!

Just wondering. Would anyone know if it's possible to put in some custom CSS to display if a widget or plugin won't load due to Javascript being turned off?

After my drama earlier; I've realised that a good chunk of my site relies on widgets/plugins that use Javascript.

Any help greatly appreciated!

I managed to get a non-javascript version of my plugin that shows related content, etc. I don't mind the ads not showing if a user disabled javascript, but having no related content/most popular widgets appearing was a bummer.

Just wanted to add a thank you for pointing me in the right direction for testing out on your end!

Actually JS is an integral part of Suffusion too.
You could use the <noscript> tag to tell a browser what to do (http://www.w3schools.com/tags/tag_noscript.asp). The noscript declaration can include all other HTML tags.
