Recent Posts Bar

Postby Ashley » 27 May 2012, 09:35

Hi, I was wondering if it would be possible to add a recent posts bar across the top of just the main content that does not push the sidebar down. An example of what I am talking about would be here: http://www.iheartnaptime.net/. I wasn't sure if this was possible on this theme. I am new to wordpress so any info would be greatly appreciated! Here is my website for reference: www.cherishedbliss.com

Thanks!

You can do this by using the Recent Posts widget in either the Widget Area Below Header or in an Ad-hoc Widget area on your page.

The recent post widget doesn't show thumbnails. I can't seem to find a widget that displays the thumbnails of your most recent posts. I do not understand the ad hoc widgets. I have read about them a few places but it just seems to be over my head. Is there a simple explanation of those? In using an ad hoc widget would I be able to place something above the main content without pushing down my sidebar. I have an ad network in my sidebar and it has to remain above the fold.

Thanks!

If you want thumbnails, try using the Query Posts widget.

Ashley

Its dead easy. In your page to do what you want to do put
Code: Select all
[suffusion-widgets id='1']
as the first line on your page ABOVE everything else.

Then go to Dashboard > Appearance > Widgets and drag and drop whichever widget that you want into ad-hoc widget 1. Configure the widget options.

That's it just view the page. :D

Thanks Colin! If I use the ad hoc widget in my post in order to only have the widget above the main content it seems I would have to delete and re-enter the code into my newest post. I am wanting the widget to always be just above the main content, no matter what page you are on. Basically I suppose I am wanting a widget area above main content (I don't want the widget to push the sidebar down)Can I obtain this by using the ad hoc widget or are those for use in posts only?

Thanks for all your help!

No you don't have to delete the post just edit it and put the adhoc widget in before any text.

If you want the same thing above every post then you would be better off using the custom template option. That way you don't have to put the ad-hoc short code in every post just assign the custom template to all your posts and it will automatically appear on every one.

Do a little bit of experimentation, it is worth the effort. I have a development site that is a sub-domain of the main site and use that for testing before I put anything live. You could do the same.

If you don't want to push the sidebar down, you might want to try a sticky post with only the ad hoc widgets. That will always stay at the top.
