Control Excerpts

Postby KaseeP » 31 Oct 2009, 21:43

Hello,

First, I must say I really like your theme.

I am trying to control the effects of excerpts based on what is put in the body of a post.

I would like the excerpt to apply only to text and pictures, but NOT to video. This way I can embed a YouTube video or other video and it will show in full on the blog, but if I write a 400 word post with one picture, only a thumbnail picture and the first part of the text will show up with a "...Read More" link at the end.

I have tried a few Excerpt plugins but could not get the correct effect. I'm new to WordPress, but I'm learning quickly. Any advise would be great.

Thanks,

Kasee

Hi,
What you are asking for is supported out of the box in the theme. You can go to the option settings under "Excerpts / Full Contents" and select where you want excerpts to show. Give it a try. It will not include videos in the excerpt, but it will include images.

Currently it doesn't show a "Read More" link, but you can click on the post title to see the entire post.

Thanks Syontan,

Everything you said I am aware of. I was wondering if you know how to do what I am trying to do though.

I would like the excerpt to apply only to text and pictures, but NOT to video. This way I can embed a YouTube video or other video and it will show in full on the blog, but if I write a 400 word post with one picture, only a thumbnail picture and the first part of the text will show up with a "...Read More" link at the end.

Hi,
I guess I have not understood what you asked (both the times). Currently the excerpts do NOT apply to videos and they apply to text and pictures. Isn't that what you are asking for?

See here for an example: http://mynethome.net/blog/category/hit-or-miss/ . The first post ("Settling with Settlers of Catan") has text and an image. The excerpt shows an image. The second post ("The Yes Men Fix the World – Pranks with a Twist") has text and a YouTube video. Only the text is shown in the excerpt.

What am I missing in your question?

Sorry Sayontan I will try to explain another way.

I love what the built-in excerpt control does to text and images. Showing a thumbnail and the except is perfect for pictures and text. However, I am trying to find a way to get video to show just like pictures do and then if a user wants to click on the title they can read the whole text of the post.

This is the blog I'm working on for my wife and a friend of hers.

One of the most recent posts has a YouTube video and I was wanting that to show up on the home page similar to how a picture would.

I found some code that I added to get the "...Read More" link. Now I'm just down to figuring out how to get the video to do what I want.

Thanks,

Kasee

Ah, okay. Now I see what you are asking. Unfortunately this is not a simple change and it will require some pretty big additions to the code. I can try doing this sometime in the next few weeks.
