Featured Content - Repetition of Posts

Post by bb323232 » 01 Aug 2010, 19:36

Hi, first just want to say what a great template, congratulations Sayontan.

I'm testing out this template and the problem I'm seeing is that when the "Featured Content" slider is enabled, the posts are repeated in the section below the slider. See for example these sites:
http://wildlifenews.co.uk/
http://www.troydeshanodev.com/

When a sticky is added to a post, the same thing happens - they're repeated below the slider. Someone mentioned (on this forum) to use an exclusion plugin, but when i tried that, the post is excluded from both areas.

I've used other WP magazine templates before (which aside from this feature were not as good as this one) - and the standard is for the slider and the rest of the home page to be 'connected' (i.e., no repeats).

Is it possible to have this feature added?

Thank you.

Use the Suffusion featured content widget, you can use post ID's and pick the posts you want to feature, that way posts on the front page should be different to your featured content or at least once you have enough posts to be able to do that.

You may also want to try this plugin below to be used in conjunction with the above idea, it allows you to exclude a post from the front home page and therefore using post ID's and the featured content widget you can instead show it as featured content on the home page of your blog.

I have the same problem. My website has many authors which means many posts per day so I set the featured posts to show always the latest posts. However this way the posts are repeated underneath the featured content gallery too. Can anyone help please?

Thanks Dark_Fox28.

I ended up setting up a "Featured Posts" category and just marked the ones I wanted. In Featured Content, I chose "Hide sticky posts" (since they would just repeat in the other section) and set the Number of Latest Posts to 1. This actually works out pretty well, although most of the time I want the featured content to be the newest content, so there is bound to be some repetition.

It seems to me that the best way to fix this problem would still be to fix Featured Content so that it's integrated with the other parts in terms of posts.

Far easier to just use the Post ID in the widget featured content plugin, The post ID can easily be seen just by clicking on the post in your admin area where you will see it in the browser, i have tried the feaured content widget with Post ID and it works fabulously well and also keeps the blog tidier by not having a featured clickable link in your sidebar or header.

That plugin i link to works well also for enabling you to not show selected posts on the front page.

Maybe something like this could be the solution, see the 2nd point
http://www.smashingmagazine.com/2009/06 ... oop-hacks/
(I don't know any coding, I'm just guessing)

Why on earth would you do that when you can handpick the post for featured content using Post ID for featured content widget and exclude categories using plugins such as Simply Exclude or exclude specific posts using clixcorp post category excluder, why edit code when plugins do the job for you.

I wonder why i have been bothering to come here and offer help when people like yourself seem to just ignore my very reasonable advice, do what you want but you are making the job harder for yourself when really there are very easy options available to you.

Indeed Andy you have even ignored me completely and have not even acknowledge my existence.

Intervention, folks.

Dark Fox,
Your suggestions are much appreciated. However every problem has multiple fixes and the one suggested by andym is more along the lines of what I should do rather than what users should do. Mind you, not everyone might want to use the widget area for featured posts, because they might want to have something like 3 columns in that widget area.

In any case I have already put in a fix for this in version 3.6.0 that is quite different from what Smashing Magazine suggests.
