Can responsive nav menu be collapse instead of dropdown?

Post by andersonmultimedia » 15 May 2014, 20:18

Why does Suffusion reduce nav to old fashion dropdown style menus, instead of the more modern looking collapse style responsive nav menu? I have had clients complain about how the dropdowns function on iphones. Is there a way to make them the collapse style like 2014 Theme does?

I suspect not easily. I look forward to seeing other comments or solutions.

I agree with your clients comments though I have just got into building a responsive site for a customer and must admit I don't like the display on my iphone.

I'm starting to get somewhere using this guy's tutorial. I've managed to get the toggle icon to toggle my menu on/off. But I still need to get it be my standard nav instead of dropdown. See my site: http://andersonmm.com

Any ides Colin? Drake?

Thanks for the link it is useful.

It will be a little more complicated in Suffusion I suspect.

I will have a play over the next few days and come back to you.

Suffusion is such a great and versatile theme. This is the one thing it's missing to be an awesome modern theme. I hope Sayontan continues to develop it. It's been a while since an update.

I wonder if I put my nav in widget below header - if it will work better with the responsive toggle??

Until I will have time to look for a "collapsible" solution can try my plugin for styling the existing select lists: http://www.drafie-design.nl/suffusion-s ... nu-plugin/
(the plugin come with its default styles, but it make possible to add your own custom styles at Custom Includes).

Hey Drake. This is great! Thanks for working on these two last plugins. Another major issue with iPhone visitors was that after making a selection from the responsive dropdown nav, iPhone displayed a scroll wheel, which required visitor to click menu item, and also click "Done". iPhone users complained that this was cumbersome. Does your solution resolve that problem as well? (No secondary scroll wheel or need to click 'Done'?) I don't have an iPhone to check this, and can't simulate this in a web browser.

I don't have any kind of smartphone, so I don't know what problems are solved (on desktop your menu looks just fine :) )... The last plugin convert <select> to <ul>, so, probably will work smoother on iPhones too, but I don't know.

Yes - your solution looks/works great! I'm glad I am not the only web designer without a smartphone. I'll have to check next time I can borrow an iPhone from someone. This behavior only happened on iPhone and did not happen on any other smartphone I checked (at the mobile phone store). Thanks again for continuing to support Suffusion theme. You're the best.
