Alt Tag Errors for Gravatar Images - SEO Error

Post by bucks » 09 Jun 2015, 15:52

Hi,

We've been cleaning up our act SEO-wise and using a number of tools to do it. A big issue was images that didn't have attributes (Alt Tags). So we went through our blog posts and made sure we added info in the Alt Tag space for all the images in our posts. That fixed a big part of the problem, but we were left with an issue we don't know how to address (since we don't mess with the back-end of our Wordpress install or the Suffusion theme - we do everything via the "front end" - using Suffusions myriad options, etc).

The comments on our blog include gravatars. Those gravatars are considered images, and they are missing their attributes. Here is a piece of code verbatim:
<img alt='' src='http://1.gravatar.com/avatar/d908f377d4 ... &d=mm&r=pg' srcset='http://1.gravatar.com/avatar/d908f377d4 ... &d=mm&r=pg 2x' class='avatar avatar-48 photo' height='48' width='48' />
As you can see, there is nothing between the quotes after the img alt= and as a result, the website auditing tools see it as poor SEO practice and return errors for all of the gravatars. That means multiple errors per page, depending on the number of individual comments.

There is no practical way to fix all of this manually. So, would it be possible to have Suffusion automatically include as a default (or a selectable option) something like the phrase "Gravatar Image" in between the quotes for all of the img alt tags for the gravatars?

Thank you.

Hi bucks, are you using a plugin to manage your gravatars or did you adjust the settings under Settings -> Discussion -> Avatars in your website admin panel?

Hi @mbrsolution

Thanks for your reply. I'd forgotten I'd posted this!

I'm not using any type of plugin for gravatars. Actually, I don't think that I even set any settings - if I did, it was a very long time ago - I'm guessing that these are the defaults. You can see what's checked in the attached screen cap.

Thanks for your help. I'd love to be able to put this to bed.

Hi Bucks, looking at the image you submitted can you change your settings to Gravatar Logo.

However Suffusion does not control the alt tag and how users manage their Gravatar if they have a Gravatar http://en.gravatar.com/account set up. If you are concern about the alt and title tag for SEO purposes you might want to search in WordPress plugins repository for plugins that might help you with your issue. Here is a plugin https://wordpress.org/plugins/gravatar-alt-title-fix/I found that you might like to test. If you have users login into your website, you might like to try the following avatar plugin https://wordpress.org/plugins/wp-user-avatar/.

Regards

Thank you for your suggestions. I'll switch to the logo option and will try the plugin you suggested. We don't require login so the 2nd one wouldn't be of as much use.

Thank you again.
